Expected release: 2019
Generously funded by a Jefferson Trust Grant, the UVA University Singers and music professor Michael Slon will produce a new edition of the Songs of the University of Virginia. American college songs have developed as a vessel of school spirit and pride, a snapshot of collegiate history and traditions, and a distinct musical repertoire in their own right. The approaching Bicentennial is a perfect time to capture and update – in a form usable by faculty, students, historians, and alumni of the University – the spirit, history, and tradition of UVA represented in its musical songs, together with relevant musical and historical context. And while songs continue to unite us in public moments, be it at a concert or athletic event, the ability to have (and perform) the music in more private settings can serve to connect the extended UVA family more deeply around the globe. The goal is to disseminate this book widely in conjunction with UVA’s Bicentennial.
